Sandwich toaster for camping and outdoor

Camper sandwich toaster

Camper sandwich toaster – the sandwich toaster for the gas cooker!

Who doesn’t love them, that crunchy sandwich toast? Oh yes, something different from bread from the Omnia oven or the crunchy baguette in France.

Wouldn’t it be great and also varied to have a sandwich toaster with you when camping?

We are rather “currentless” on the road. That means I leave the drying of my curls to the air and the blender is powered by the muck.

By chance I found a “sandwich toaster” on Amazon* that works without electricity and is also known as “RidgeMonkey”. Well, the thing doesn’t look like a conventional sandwich toaster. More like a thing you can pull over your head when someone breaks in.

Frank must have finally believed that I had a screw loose when the part arrived. Well, by now the guy knows that there’s no point in tightening my loose screws 😁.

So he let me do it and watched my joy with raised eyes, shaking his head.

I’m always on the lookout for ideas for camping or the camping kitchen and couldn’t wait to try it out. And neither did Frank, actually. After all, it’s about food and its taste buds.

I was amazed at how big the thing actually is. With a surface area of 15 cm (W) x 14 cm (L) x 3 cm (H), these large toast slices fit in super and you can also top it off wonderfully.

In total, it is 35 cm long and weighs just 335g.

In addition, like the Omnia oven, it is suitable for every type of hob (gas, ceramic, electric) – except for induction, because aluminium does not conduct heat.

The toaster is separable at the top hinge, non-stick coated and made of a high-quality aluminium alloy.

The insides are smooth and the outsides are slightly ribbed.

The clincher:

You can even use the individual parts as a small pan, e.g. for a fried egg.

On the last holiday, the time finally came. We tried it out.

We had

  • Cheese
  • Cooked ham
  • Processed cheese
  • Salami
  • Jalapeño
  • Tuna
  • and lots of sandwich toast

In other words, everything you would use as ingredients in an electric sandwich toaster.

The only difference was that we now needed a gas cartridge cooker. But that was actually the least of my problems, since I have several of these things.

The handling of the sandwich toaster is super easy:

  • Toast as desired
  • open
  • Place filled toast on the plates (greasing is not necessary!)
  • Fold and close the panels
  • Place the toaster on the gas cartridge cooker
  • Turn on the gas cartridge cooker

Set the gas flame to a medium flame size. After about 1-1.5 minutes, turn the sandwich toaster over and open it briefly to check the browning. Then roast the other side. When the appropriate browning is achieved, the toast is ready.

Within 3 minutes you’ll have a delicious sandwich toast – and without much heating!

Handle should be placed on a stainless steel support

A little tip for toasting:

When placing the sandwich toaster on the gas cooker, make sure that

  1. the ring on the handle is locked and
  2. the handle is laid down so that it rests on a stainless steel support

This prevents the sandwich toaster from slipping off the flame and staying evenly on the flame.

Don't be afraid of cleaning!

Our Josy was so excited that she put the toast on aplates, closed it and put the whole thing on the flame. However, she forgot to put a slice of toast on top of it before closing it! So all the cheese stuck to the lid. Old Swede! I was only thinking of the scrubbing and Scouring action that lay ahead of me….

But fiddlesticks. Everything could be wiped off with a cake paper without any problems! With this, the sandwich toaster had already earned another plus point with me. You can simply separate the two plates for cleaning. Water, cloth, washing-up liquid and it sparkles like the kitchen floor at Meister Proper.

However, we have since acquired a “double” toaster. You can fit sandwich toasts for 2 people right in there.

With a size of 35.5 x 24 x 3 cm and a weight of less than 600g, it is still a great lightweight, which mega expands the camping kitchen.

We use this double toaster* because I really love the grooves in it. They make an additional, brownish groove pattern.

Conclusion

I can absolutely recommend the sandwich toaster for the gas cooker. It enriches the small camping kitchen and makes it more varied. Everything is ready in no time at all.

It is small, light and you can even use the individual parts as a pan for small things, such as a fried egg, scrambled eggs or even a small piece of meat.

Cleaning is absolutely “easy going”: cloth, water and washing-up liquid – done. It’s so fast that even Villarriba and Villabajo would be jealous.

And…..Frank now loves the part dearly 😂. That’s why I had to order the double version 😂.

What I also found great:

The fact that the gas canister cooker was on the table also made it a great atmosphere.

Sure, you had to wait because we only have one sandwich toaster and we had to take turns with 4 people, but that, in combination with the flame from the gas cartridge cooker, made it so cosy.

Of course, the preparation works just as well on the gas cooker in the vehicle.
